Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies (5 ECTS)

Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies is a course organized by the Universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä and Hilma Network of Gender Studies.
The teachers of the course are Ph.D. Tuija Saresma and Ph.D. Annamari Vänskä. The course is aimed at the exchange students of gender studies in Universities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Lappi, Oulu, Tampere, Turku and Åbo Akademi. During the course, the students will learn some important themes of Women’s and Gender Studies with a specific Finnish perspective.
The course is divided into seven themes: nationality, normativity, emotions, home and domesticity, consumption and gender, sex and public space, and intersectionality, through which the students will gain an insight into Finnish society, Finnish research on gender and gendered power, normativity, and intersectionality in Finnish context. For each theme the students will read academic texts and other material available in the internet and discuss them in groups in the Moodle learning environment.
Course program: The course starts with an introductory week (week 41) and ends with a summary and course feedback (week 48). Each of the teachers is responsible for three weeks, Tuija for weeks 42−44 and Annamari for weeks 45−47. For the introductory week and weeks 48−49 (week 48, intersectionality and week 49, evaluation) they’ll be both present.
