Aoife

Hilma is a member of AOIFE, the Association of Institutions for Feminist Education and Research in Europe. It is a European association for Women’s Studies based on institutional membership and a structure which links institutions dedicated to initiating and supporting feminist education and research in Europe. AOIFE is also a forum for collectively addressing and acting on issues concerning Women’s Studies by means of co-operation and networking. The AIOFE-secretariat is located in Utrecht, Netherlands. Council president of AOIFE is professor Kirsi Saarikangas, Helsinki, Finland (2007-2009), vice-president Adelina Sanchez Espinosa from Granada, Spain and secretary Jeannette van der Sanden, Utrecht.

Athena

ATHENA means Advanced Thematic Network in Activities in Women’s Studies in Europe. It is a Socrates Thematic Network Project in which currently 105 Women’s and Gender Studies Programmes at universities, research institutes and documentation centres in Europe participate. It was created in 1996 by AOIFE, and was selected as a Socrates Thematic Network Project in September 1998. The ATHENA central coordination is located at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, professor Berteke Waaldijk being the director after prof. Rosi Baidotti’s leadership for the 2 first ATHENA’s. In 2001, the first three year period of the Thematic Network Project came to an end, and there was a dissemination phase from October 2002 to October 2003. Athena II was started on October 2003 and will last till September 2006. This year European commission accepted ATHENA’s application for ATHENA III, 2007-2009.
ATHENA participates also activily to networking & co-operation of EU’s thematic networks, called Archipelago

Hilma is member of ATHENA, and from Hilma’s members the universities of Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Oulu and Tampere and Åbo Akademi been also active in ATHENA. Aino-Maija Hiltunen is a member of ATHENA’s Task force.
